You can choose between three different types of cover:

  • Compulsory vehicle liability: this covers property damage and personal injury to third parties.

  • Voluntary partial casco: this covers damage to your own car that you did not cause, such as marten bites. This cover may be compulsory for leased vehicles, depending on the contract.

  • Voluntary full casco: in addition to partial casco insurance, this also covers collision damage you cause to your own car. This cover may be compulsory for leased vehicles, depending on the contract.

Common questions about car insurance

The cost of your car insurance premiums in Switzerland depends on a number of factors. These include:

  • The value of the vehicle

  • The main driver (e.g. age and gender)

  • The type of cover (e.g. how high your excess is)

Comparis tip: if you calculate premiums from different car insurance companies and compare deals, you can often save money.

Calculate car insurance

Here are some tips to help you find low-cost car insurance:

  1. Compare car insurance: use the Comparis premium calculator to compare. Also check whether you need partial or full casco insurance for your car or whether third-party liability insurance is sufficient.

  2. Be cautious when it comes to add-ons and extras that you don’t need.

  3. Take advantage of discounts and reduced premium models.

You can find more tips in our article on how to save money on car insurance.

Which car insurance is the cheapest depends on your situation. This is because car insurance premiums vary depending on the coverage, your age and your vehicle. Your claims history and driving experience also affect the premium. There are also differences between the various providers.

It’s therefore a good idea to calculate your individual car insurance premium. Compare insurers and find the right insurance for you.

In May 2025, Comparis surveyed the Swiss population to assess its level of satisfaction with Swiss car insurers.

The survey shows that all insurance companies have received ratings of good to very good. The best performers were Mobiliar and Vaudoise.

A third-party vehicle liability insurance policy is compulsory in Switzerland. Partial and full casco car insurance, on the other hand, are optional in most cases.

You can find more information on the subject in the articles on the different types of cover and the differences between casco insurance policies.

Partial casco insurance covers damage to your car that you are not responsible for as the driver. This includes theft, natural hazards and vandalism.

A full casco insurance policy also covers damage that you cause yourself. For example, you might scrape against a post while parking and scratch the paintwork of your car.

Which add-ons are worth taking out for your car insurance depends on your personal needs. For example, the age and type of your vehicle and how you use it play a role.

In Switzerland, you can generally cancel your car insurance in the following instances:

  • Your policy is expiring

  • You’re changing vehicle

  • Your premiums change

  • The vehicle keeper is changing

  • A claim is covered

If you occasionally drive someone else’s vehicle, it’s worth taking out cover for driving other cars. This is available as a personal liability insurance add-on.

If you have an accident in someone else’s car, different types of insurance may cover the damage. This also depends on possible third-party damage – i.e. damage to other vehicles or people. The first step is to check the cover provided by the driver’s own car insurance.

In the event of a claim, the insurer will usually check whether it can pass on the benefits to other policies held by the driver.

In principle, electric cars are subject to the same rules as petrol or diesel vehicles. This means that you definitely need liability insurance. Partial casco and full casco are voluntary. However, some insurance companies also have special add-ons, for example for the battery or wallbox.

Good to know: a study by Comparis shows that electric car insurance is usually cheaper than that for petrol or diesel vehicles. Some insurance companies offer additional discounts for electric cars.

In the case of leased vehicles, full casco insurance is usually required. You need this in addition to compulsory third-party liability insurance. Some leasing companies offer car insurance as part of the lease. Before signing the lease, clarify which type of insurance you need.

Important: do you want to take out insurance independently of the leasing company? In that case, you must notify your leasing company of the insurer you have chosen.

Car insurance premiums for young drivers and new drivers are often higher than for experienced drivers. The premium for new and young drivers also depends on factors such as the vehicle, gender of the driver and scope of coverage.

Insurance companies usually set a higher excess for new and young drivers – often at least 1,000 francs. However, some insurers do not require a higher excess.
