How can I save money when moving with a moving company?
You can keep your moving costs low by dismantling your furniture and packing your boxes yourself. You can also compare offers from various companies with topmovers, Comparis’ moving partner.
2. What additional moving costs are not covered by the calculator?
Alongside the costs for the moving company, there are often other expenses.
You have to clean your apartment according to your rental agreement. If you don’t want to clean the apartment yourself, have it cleaned by a professional.
Tenants are liable only for excessive wear and tear. This includes deep scratches on wooden flooring or scribble marks on wallpaper. If the tenant is liable for damage, they are liable only for the current value, not for the replacement value.
The landlord is responsible for normal wear and tear. This could include normal wear on a fitted carpet or patches on walls where pictures have been, for example.
Notify Swiss Post of your new address and instruct them to forward your mail before you move. The post office will then send your letters and parcels to your new address as of the specified date.
Remember also to inform the authorities, your bank and your telecoms provider of your new address. You’ll find a list of those you need to contact in our change of address article.
If you pack your household contents yourself, you will need moving boxes. Depending on the number of boxes, this can be expensive. Find out tips on how to get cheap moving boxes here.
You may have to cover costs for disposing of your old furniture. These costs can vary depending on:
Amount of furniture
Size of the furniture
Whether you dispose of the furniture yourself or have it picked up
Where you dispose of the furniture
3. How much does it cost to move without a removal firm?
You can move home without using a professional moving company. You will need to be well organized and plan a lot of time for this, however. There are also additional costs to consider.
The amount and volume of items you want to move determines the size of moving van you need. The cost of hiring a removal van depends on its size and the included mileage. Expect to pay at least 50 francs per day.
Organize enough people to help you move. Generally speaking, you’ll need at least one person per room.
Your helpers will work up an appetite, so make sure that there is plenty to eat and drink. When you’re all finished, you can invite your helpers out for dinner as a way of saying thanks.
You can make your move considerably easier by reserving parking using “no stopping” signs. You need to contact the municipality and reserve these in good time. The cost varies depending on where you live.
4. How can I get free quotes for my moving costs?
At Comparis, you can request moving cost quotes via topmovers, Comparis’ moving partner. You’ll receive up to five quotes. This service is free of charge and completely without obligation.
Good to know: removal firms generally have carriers’ and business liability insurance, so you are covered in the event of damage or loss.
