FAQs on life insurance
Life insurance is insurance that cover risks such as death or disability – so-called "risk" life insurance. However, there are other types of life insurance that primarily function as private pensions. These are called capital-forming life insurance policies. Both insurance options are included in the third pillar in Switzerland and thus part of your private pension plan.
In Switzerland, a distinction is made between so-called "risk" life insurance and "mixed" life insurance. Both are designed to cover the financial risk of incapacity for work due to accident or illness. However, mixed life insurance also covers the financial risk of death, and includes a savings element that can be invested in a fund until retirement.
There is no short answer to this question, because everyone's circumstances are different and require correspondingly diverse solutions. We therefore recommend you get professional advice. An advisor can analyze your financial situation should you become unable to work, ascertain how well your family is protected in the event of your death and identify any shortfalls in your pension. This will quickly give you a sound insight into what kind of cover you need.
Your pension plan is individually tailored to your personal needs. This means that the cost of life insurance will also vary. The premium therefore depends entirely on your circumstances. However, as a guide, you can expect to pay from around 100 francs per month for a policy with a savings element.
Life insurance is a long-term pension solution. Since it is often combined with pillar 3a, the policies usually run until retirement. Note that the earliest payout is 5 years before and the latest 5 years after statutory retirement age has been reached.
In pillar 3a, you have the option to have your life insurance paid out early under certain circumstances. If you do so, you will receive the surrender value of the policy.
With pillar 3a life insurance, you can deduct the contributions from your taxable income. However, there is a legal maximum. If you have your life insurance paid out, a reduced tax rate applies.
