The basic insurance comparison tool contains products (premiums) from providers (health insurers) that have been approved by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).
The supplemental insurance comparison contains products from providers that accept quote/contact requests from Optimatis, and/or products from providers that do not accept quote/contact requests from Optimatis. The providers listed in this comparison tool use the interface offered by Optimatis.
In the “standard view”, Comparis shows products from providers that accept quote/contact requests from Optimatis, as well as the cheapest and the most expensive product. In the “detailed view”, Comparis shows all products approved by the FOPH (basic insurance comparison) or all premiums from providers who use the interface offered by Optimatis (supplementary insurance comparison).
The search results are ranked according to objectively measurable criteria, corresponding to the selected filter. Results exempted from this order are clearly marked as “Advertisement”.
The information on the availability of family doctors is based on the data from Medswissnet, the Swiss umbrella organisation of doctors’ networks. The data only includes doctors affiliated with the association and may differ from the family doctor directory used by health insurers.

Frequently asked questions on comparing health insurance
Health insurance premiums differ depending on your place of residence, health insurer, model, deductible and age. Compare basic insurance premiums according to your situation and find the cheapest health insurance option for you.
Mandatory health insurance
You can usually change your basic insurance every year. The deadline for changing your health insurance or cancelling the policy is 30 November. Important: if 30 November falls on a weekend, the health insurer must receive the cancellation notice on the Friday before.
Health insurers must accept new policyholders regardless of their health situation. You therefore do not have to provide any information about pre-existing conditions.
Supplemental insurance
Supplemental insurance usually requires you to answer a health questionnaire. Having a pre-existing condition does not necessarily mean you will be rejected. At most, the pre-existing condition will be excluded from the cover.
Important: if you are switching to a new health insurer, do not cancel your old supplemental insurance until you have received confirmation of acceptance from the new health insurer.
For further information, see our article on taking out supplemental insurance.
Health insurance premiums for basic insurance rose by 6% on average in 2025. This was already the third major premiums increase in a row.
You can absorb the increase in costs in the best possible way by choosing your health insurance company, deductible and insurance model.
That's why it's important to make the most of your savings potential and compare health insurance companies.
The average monthly premium in 2025 is 378.70 francs.
The average premium is calculated by dividing the total of all premiums paid in Switzerland by the number of insured persons.
However, the actual premiums differ—sometimes greatly—depending on your age, place of residence, deductible and insurance model.
On average, premiums for 2025 are highest in the cantons of Geneva, Ticino and Basel-Stadt.
The cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Uri and Obwalden have the lowest average premiums in 2025.
The answer to the question of the best health insurance depends on your personal needs. Health insurers offer a range of benefits. However, health insurers provide the same benefits in each of their basic insurance policies.
The Comparis Quality Label shows customer satisfaction
The Comparis Label provides an important indication of customer satisfaction. In this context, we survey 4,500 policyholders every year about their satisfaction with their health insurance.
The following aspects are assessed:
Value for money
Touchpoints and contact
Quality and service
Information and transparency
The survey participants then award ratings for each characteristic. An overall rating is calculated from this. The best health insurers according to the survey are awarded a seal.

In Switzerland, accident insurance. However, if you are employed for at least eight hours per week by a single employer or are registered with the regional employment centre, you will be automatically insured against accidents in accordance with the Accident Insurance Act (AIA). Everyone else must include accident cover in their basic insurance. There are also alternative solutions for the self-employed.
Additional accident cover via supplemental insurance can be useful, depending on your needs – even if you already have accident insurance through your employer.
All basic insurance policies cover in-patient treatment and examinations in a general ward in hospitals within your canton of residence. However, would you like to be treated in a hospital in another canton or would you prefer a higher level of quality and comfort? If so, you can take out supplemental hospital insurance. Further information about supplementary hospital insurance is available here.
You do not necessarily have to take out basic and supplemental insurance from the same health insurer. However, separate insurance policies may incur administration fees for the supplementary insurance.
