What factors affect my health insurance premium?
The cost of your health insurance premiums depends on:
Your place of residence: health insurers may set different premiums depending on the canton in which you live. In some cantons, there are still premium regions. This means that the premiums sometimes even differ within the same canton.
Your age: there are three age groups. Children up to the age of 18 pay the lowest premiums. Young adults up to the age of 25 usually pay less than adults aged 26 or over.
Health insurance
Deductible: The deductible is the amount of healthcare costs that you must pay yourself each year. There are several deductibles to choose from – ranging between 300 and 2,500 francs. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium.
Health insurance model: the standard model gives you a free choice of doctor. With other models the choice of doctors is limited. In return, you pay lower monthly premiums.
However, the services provided by the basic insurance are determined by law and are always the same. They have no influence on the premium.
Tips for saving money on health insurance premiums in Switzerland
You can save money on your health insurance – sometimes up to over 3,500 francs per year. You can do this, for example, by comparing health insurers or by changing the model. Comparis shares some tips to help you save money on your health insurance.
Discounts for paying your premiums in advance
Many policyholders pay their health insurance premiums monthly. Some insurers allow you to pay your bill yearly or half-yearly. Some health insurers will reward you with a discount. This means that you can save up to two percent on your premiums – depending on the health insurer.
Premium reductions for people on low incomes
Depending on your income and assets, you may be entitled to an individual premium reduction. The individual cantons set the income limits.
Reminder email for new premiums
As a rule, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) announces the premiums for the following year at the end of September. The Comparis reminder email will notify you when the new premiums are announced. This will help you to compare premiums and save money in the following year.
