1. What is full casco insurance?

Full casco insurance is a type of comprehensive car insurance. It’s usually worthwhile for newer vehicles. Unlike car liability insurance, it’s generally optional.

Full casco combines partial casco and collision casco in one insurance policy and covers various types of damage to your own vehicle.

2. What does full casco insurance cover?

Full casco generally covers the following:

  • Any damage to you vehicle that you didn't cause yourself such as marten bites, broken glass, hail damage, vandalism or theft (partial casco).

  • Damage to your own vehicle that you caused yourself (collision casco).

What if my car is a write-off?

If your car is a write-off, full casco will generally pay for the damage. Depending on the insurance policy and the vehicle’s age, you will receive either the replacement value or the current value of the vehicle.

Overview of insurance models

Here are the differences between liability, partial casco and full casco insurance policies.

Note: the graphic is interactive.

Good to know: many insurance companies have a bonus system. This means your premiums increase after a claim, but if you don’t make any claims, your premiums are reduced.

3. Do I need full casco insurance for my car?

The idea is simple: by paying higher premiums, you protect yourself against more risks.

This is particularly worthwhile if you have:

  • A new car (up to four years old)

  • A high-value vehicle with a high replacement cost

Alongside your car’s age, your usage, driving behaviour and your financial situation also play a role. See our article Which car insurance do I need? for more information.

Full casco insurance: mandatory for leased cars

Good to know: a leased car usually comes with obligatory full casco insurance. This is valid for however long you have leased the car for.

4. What does full casco insurance cost in Switzerland?

Premiums vary according to:

  • Vehicle make, model, engine, equipment

  • Driver profile: age, gender, nationality

  • Cover: benefits, add-ons

  • Deductible

  • Provider

Do you park your vehicle outdoors or in a garage? Depending on the insurer, this can also affect your premiums.

5. Full casco deductible: how can I save?

If you choose a higher deductible, you pay less on your premiums. However, you will have higher costs if you make a claim.

Tip: when choosing your deductible, consider how much you can and would like to pay out of your own pocket if you make a claim.

6. What supplemental insurance is available?

Depending on your preferences, driving style and the risks you tend to take, it may be worth considering some supplemental insurance:

7. Is parking damage covered by full casco insurance?

Depending on the policy, full casco may or may not cover parking damage. Read the insurance terms and conditions to find out what applies to your chosen policy. Depending on your circumstances, taking out insurance for damage while parked can also be worthwhile.

8. Summary: is full casco insurance worth it for my car?

It’s best to work out for yourself if you need full casco insurance or not. These points can help you decide:

  • Full casco is more worthwhile for newer vehicles and valuable vehicles.

  • Anyone who would come under financial pressure if their car was written off can insure themselves in advance with full casco cover.

  • Leasing is usually only possible with full casco cover.

  • It’s worth comparing benefits and premiums.
