Get a clear overview

Switch on your hazard lights and low-beam headlights and position your warning triangle to alert other drivers to the accident. Assess the situation and if necessary call an ambulance, the fire brigade or the police. If someone has been injured, you should always call the police. Attend to anyone with injuries while waiting.

Fill in the accident report or involve the police

You can use the European accident report provided by your insurance company to document the accident. Include the contact details of any witnesses. If it is not clear who caused the accident, the police should be involved. They will then document the accident. Important: don't admit responsibility. Everyone involved must sign the accident report.

Follow your insurer's instructions

Report the claim to your insurer immediately. Don't accept any direct payment requests. In most cases, you can submit your claim online or call a 24/7 helpline. Have your accident documentation ready to send to the insurer if they request it.

Send bills straight to your insurance company

You can send payment requests straight to your insurer. The insurance company will determine who was at fault (liability and operational risk) and check the extent of cover for the claim and the payment amount requested. It will then settle the invoice directly, taking account of any deductible.

Special cases of car damage

  • Personal injury
If you are involved in an accident in which someone is injured, you must call the police and fill in a police report for your insurance company.

  • Cancellation in the event of a claim
After making a claim that is covered by your car insurance, you can cancel your car insurance contract. You must cancel your car insurance in writing and by registered post within 14 days of being notified that the claim will be covered.

  • Write-off/total loss
In the event of technical or actual total loss, the car cannot be repaired. In the event of constructive total loss, the cost of repairs exceeds the value of the car. The amount of compensation for total damage depends on age, mileage and original price of the vehicle.
