Waiting period
Insurance cover commences after a waiting period of 3 months, with the exception of compensation for damages, criminal proceedings and disputes with insurance companies, health insurers and occupational pension funds relating to accidents (tort law).
Exclusions
Legal cases concerning:
Criminal charges filed against third parties
Criminal defence in the case of deliberate violation of legal provisions: Assumption of costs only after acquittal
Debt collection and bankruptcy laws
Cases involving owner-occupied properties containing more than three apartments or non-owner-occupied properties or properties located abroad, as well as holiday apartments rented out for more than two months per year.
Disputes with cohabiting partners: disputes with spouses or cohabiting partners are included in legal advice cover (one consultation per issue). Disputes between house or flat sharers are not covered.

Disputes involving maintenance payments (legal advice cover only)
Choice of attorney
If the involvement of an attorney proves necessary, the insured is able to freely choose the attorney to represent them. However, the insurance company has the right to turn down a proposed attorney. The insured can then propose three legal offices, from which one must be chosen. Before hiring the attorney, the consent and commitment to provide cover of Coop Rechtsschutz must be obtained.
Procedure for hopeless cases or differences of opinion
An arbitration procedure may be instituted. The provisions of the concordat regarding arbitral jurisdiction apply.
Notice period
Notice to cancel given by policyholder: one day’s notice possible at any time
Notice to cancel given by insurer: one month before contract expiry.
Contract term
According to contract term as set out in the policy. Minimum contract term of one year. Usually one year with tacit renewal.
What to do in the event of a claim
The insurer must be notified immediately, upon request in writing.

Benefits for victims of violent crime
Death benefits: CHF 150,000 or CHF 10,000 (children and young people up to the age of 18)
Total disability: CHF 300,000 or a life-long pension for persons over 65
Treatment costs: unlimited amount for five years
