Apple TV+ is a video-on-demand streaming service. Like Netflix or Amazon, it allows you to watch movies and series. Apple TV+ is a supplement to the Apple TV app and has been available in Switzerland since November 2019. In order to use the app or the Apple TV+subscription, you need an Apple ID.

What is the difference between Apple TV and Apple TV+?

Apple TV+ is a streaming service. You take out a subscription. For the duration of this subscription, you can watch movies and series that are in the streaming offer.

With Apple TV, you can’t subscribe, but you can rent or buy movies and series.

You can access Apple TV and Apple TV+ through the Apple TV app on your iPhone or iPad. With an Android device, you can use the services via your browser. Some movies and series are available in 4K resolution on both offerings.

Apple TV+ costs 10.90 francs per month in Switzerland. Up to five family members can use the account at the same time. Each member can use their own Apple ID with their own password.

Students get free access to Apple TV+ with an Apple Music subscription. The offer is valid until graduation. Students can only use the subscription with proof of study and cannot share it with their family.

With Apple TV+, you can take out a trial subscription for seven days. After expiry, it goes directly to a regular subscription.

Can I watch series and movies offline on Apple TV+?

With Apple TV+, you can only watch movies and series offline with an Apple device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac). There you can download the content and watch it without an internet connection. With a different operating system, you need a permanent internet connection.

Important: most of the time, the loaded movies and series are available offline for 30 days.

How does Apple TV+ differ from its competitors?

  • Smaller range of films and series

  • Mostly proprietary productions only (Apple Originals)

  • Downloading films for offline viewing only possible on Apple devices

8. What alternatives are there to Apple TV+?

There are some other streaming providers. These include Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. With blue+ from Swisscom and Play Suisse, there are also two Swiss alternatives.

9. Summary

Unlike other streaming providers, the selection is manageable with Apple TV+. The focus is strongly on in-house productions with well-known casts. For this, Apple TV+ costs less than other providers.

If you are interested in Apple Originals, the subscription is worthwhile. If you want to watch internationally known series and movies, Apple TV+ is not the right choice. Providers such as Netflix and Disney+ are more worthwhile for this.
