What is Netflix?

Netflix is a US streaming service that enables its customers to watch films and series via the Internet. The service has also been available in Switzerland since 2014. According to statistics, almost a third of all people living in Switzerland use Netflix as their go-to channel for video and TV content.

Netflix is available in almost all countries. Exceptions include China, the Crimea, North Korea and Syria. You can watch Netflix on television or on a laptop, smartphone or tablet.

Netflix records the point at which you stopped watching a series and allows you to continue watching on a different device from the same point.

What does Netflix cost in Switzerland?

Customers subscribe by paying a monthly flat fee. They can then watch as many series and films as they want. Netflix offers different price categories depending on the required resolution and the number of devices it can be accessed on simultaneously.

Customers can pay by credit card (Visa, MasterCard or American Express) or by PayPal. Netflix Gift Cards are also available for purchase online or from post offices, k kiosks or Mediamarkt.

Other deals are available from Swisscom and Sunrise, which also include Netflix subscriptions.

Which Netflix subscription plan is the best for me?

For a multi-person household, the Standard or even Premium plan is worth buying. The Premium plan is better if you want to watch series and films in 4K resolution. However, this plan has limited availability. If you live on your own and stream Netflix mainly on your mobile phone, the Basic plan is easily enough.

Remember that a Netflix subscription can only be shared with people living in the same household. If you have the Premium plan, four friends cannot share the account.

Free one-month trial

Netflix offers its customers a free trial month, during which they can test the service. If they decide to subscribe, they do not enter into a long-term contract, but can cancel their subscription at any time. This also means that you can test the Premium plan for one month and switch to a cheaper plan at the end of the trial period.

How do I cancel the Netflix plan?

You can cancel your Netflix subscription at any time. In the application, go to the Account page and choose “Cancel membership”. You can continue using your account until the end of the billing period.

What can I watch on Netflix?

You can stream over 3,100 films and 1,480 series on Netflix (as at August 2019). Although Netflix tends to focus on promoting its own series and films, it does offer others as well. Swiss productions also feature quite regularly.

What series are popular on Netflix?

Netflix is well known for its extensive and varied range of genres and its high-quality and original own productions. Popular Netflix series include:

  • Tidying Up with Marie Kondo (Netflix production)
  • Black Mirror (Netflix production)
  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  • The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
  • Friends
  • Family Guy
  • House of Cards (Netflix production)
  • How I Met Your Mother
  • Messiah (Netflix production)
  • Orange is the New Black (Netflix production)
  • Riverdale (Netflix production)
  • Sex Education (Netflix production)
  • Stranger Things (Netflix production)
  • The Crown (Netflix production)
  • Our Planet (Netflix production)

Can I watch Netflix series and films in their original languages?

Netflix offers all its films in the original language as well as dubbed into various languages. Netflix can also be set to play films or series in their original language with English subtitles. Subtitles are usually available in French, German, Italian and Spanish as well.

What does Netflix do well?

  • Netflix shows you which ten series and films are the most popular in your country. This list is updated on a daily basis.
  • Netflix is easy to use. You just need to log into your account and everything is set up on every device in the same way. The option to search by genre or title also helps you to choose a series or film. Netflix also suggests which series or film you might like to watch next. These suggestions are based on an algorithm and are displayed with a percentage match.
  • With Netflix own productions, all the episodes for a season are loaded in one go, which makes binge watching easier. One function is particularly useful here: at the start of an episode, Netflix asks you if you want to skip the introduction, which is always the same, and the recap.
  • Netflix has a wide selection of children's films. You can also set an age limit.
  • You can use Netflix offline. This is particularly useful when you are travelling. However, you cannot download all the series and films.
  • Whether you are on a trial month or not, there is no advertising on Netflix.
  • Unlike its competitors, Netflix will work on almost all end devices. So regardless of whether you want to watch your film or series on a smart TV, smartphone (with any operating system), tablet or games console, Netflix will have an app for it.

What does Netflix not do so well?

  • New films and series are not available online straightaway. This is because, in the case of non-Netflix productions, the TV broadcasters have bought the rights for the first broadcast transmission. You therefore need to wait a while until brand-new content is available on the platform. You will find hardly any of the latest blockbusters.
  • Netflix does not inform its users when it removes a series from its lineup.

What alternatives are there to Netflix?

The modern-day practice of downloading several series and films from various sources and download platforms is legal in Switzerland. Commercial alternatives to Netflix include the video-on-demand services offered by Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Swisscom TV and UPC digital TV. Here, however, users have to pay an individual fee per film.

The service is attractive to series junkies, particularly those who are interested in series from around the world. Film lovers, on the other hand, could well be disappointed with what Netflix has to offer. If you only watch a film or series every now and then, or are happy with what the regular TV channels offer, then it is probably not worth the price. Providers that offer a replay function, such as Zattoo, Wilmaa, Swisscom, Sunrise and UPC, also constitute strong competition for Netflix.
