The Netflix streaming service allows you to watch series and films on any device whenever you like. But what are the advantages and disadvantages of Netflix? And how much does it cost? Comparis answers key questions on this streaming service.
Netflix is a US streaming service that enables its customers to watch films and series via the Internet. The service has also been available in Switzerland since 2014. According to statistics, almost a third of all people living in Switzerland use Netflix as their go-to channel for video and TV content.
Netflix is available in almost all countries. Exceptions include China, the Crimea, North Korea and Syria. You can watch Netflix on television or on a laptop, smartphone or tablet.
Netflix records the point at which you stopped watching a series and allows you to continue watching on a different device from the same point.
Customers subscribe by paying a monthly flat fee. They can then watch as many series and films as they want. Netflix offers different price categories depending on the required resolution and the number of devices it can be accessed on simultaneously.
There are three types of subscription:
|Prices||CHF 11.90||CHF 16.90||CHF 21.90|
|Number of devices on which Netflix can be viewed simultaneously||1||2||4|
Information correct as at: February 2020
Customers can pay by credit card (Visa, MasterCard or American Express) or by PayPal. Netflix Gift Cards are also available for purchase online or from post offices, k kiosks or Mediamarkt.
For a multi-person household, the Standard or even Premium plan is worth buying. The Premium plan is better if you want to watch series and films in 4K resolution. However, this plan has limited availability. If you live on your own and stream Netflix mainly on your mobile phone, the Basic plan is easily enough.
Remember that a Netflix subscription can only be shared with people living in the same household. If you have the Premium plan, four friends cannot share the account.
Netflix offers its customers a free trial month, during which they can test the service. If they decide to subscribe, they do not enter into a long-term contract, but can cancel their subscription at any time. This also means that you can test the Premium plan for one month and switch to a cheaper plan at the end of the trial period.
You can cancel your Netflix subscription at any time. In the application, go to the Account page and choose “Cancel membership”. You can continue using your account until the end of the billing period.
You can stream over 3,100 films and 1,480 series on Netflix (as at August 2019). Although Netflix tends to focus on promoting its own series and films, it does offer others as well. Swiss productions also feature quite regularly.
Netflix is well known for its extensive and varied range of genres and its high-quality and original own productions. Popular Netflix series include:
Netflix offers all its films in the original language as well as dubbed into various languages. Netflix can also be set to play films or series in their original language with English subtitles. Subtitles are usually available in French, German, Italian and Spanish as well.
The modern-day practice of downloading several series and films from various sources and download platforms is legal in Switzerland. Commercial alternatives to Netflix include the video-on-demand services offered by Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Swisscom TV and UPC digital TV. Here, however, users have to pay an individual fee per film.
The service is attractive to series junkies, particularly those who are interested in series from around the world. Film lovers, on the other hand, could well be disappointed with what Netflix has to offer. If you only watch a film or series every now and then, or are happy with what the regular TV channels offer, then it is probably not worth the price. Providers that offer a replay function, such as Zattoo, Wilmaa, Swisscom, Sunrise and UPC, also constitute strong competition for Netflix.
