FAQ
In order to access a TV plan, you need the right hardware – in this case, a set-top box or “TV box”. This adapts the data from the cable or Internet connection for your TV. Alternatively, some TV models come with this hardware already installed. Providers of TV plans usually supply the necessary hardware – generally free of charge. Set-top boxes offer functions such as changing the order in which the channels appear, recording programmes and – usually – replaying past programmes.
Technologically speaking, there are now fewer differences between the deals available from digital TV providers than there were a few years ago. They should now all automatically include recording, time-shifted viewing and availability across multiple devices. However, there are still differences in the number and choice of channels available in a package. So it's worth checking the list of channels included.
Some deals also include streaming services such as Apple TV and Netflix. Sport fans can also check whether subscription channels like mySports or Sky Sports are included. Consider carefully whether the deal is actually the best one for you. It may be more cost-effective to purchase the streaming service yourself and then opt for a much less expensive Internet plan.
Replay TV allows you to watch TV shows with a time delay. Usually, this is possible for up to seven days after broadcasting. With Replay TV, you can also fast-forward. However, you can no longer completely skip advertisements on some channels without the new “Skip Ad” function.
Whether or not the “Skip Ad” feature is worth it for you depends on several factors:
1. Do you use Replay TV a lot?
2. Do you often watch private TV channels from Germany and Switzerland (e.g. RTL, VOX, ProSieben, Sat.1, 3+, TV24)?
3. Do individual advertisements bother you?
If you answered “Yes” to all three questions, then the “Skip Ad” function is worth your while.
“Skip Ad” enables you to precisely skip advertising blocks. Without “Skip Ad”, you will see advertisements on Replay TV when you
- start a programme
- skip an advertising block
- pause live or Replay TV
On public television stations, you can still skip advertisements for free.
