1. To which canton do 058 numbers belong?
Originally, the 058 was the landline dialling code for the canton of Glarus. Area codes were standardized shortly before the turn of the millennium and Glarus was subsequently assigned the number 055. Since then, 058 has been released for businesses.
2. What are numbers with 058 area codes?
As with telephone numbers with the code 0848, the 058 numbers are business numbers. These numbers are used by company employees, customer service agents or even a company’s own information helpline.
Swiss companies use 058 numbers to be able to appear anywhere in Switzerland with just one area code.
3. Are 058 numbers reputable?
Usually, yes. In recent years, many professional services companies and public administrations have switched to 058 numbers. However, aggressive call centres can also hide behind these numbers.

Do not answer incoming calls from 058 numbers. Google the phone number afterwards. This will usually tell you if it is a reputable caller.
With the app of the Swiss provider local.ch, you can switch on the caller ID. This means that you can see who is calling you – even if you do not have the number stored in your contacts.
4. Are 058 numbers chargeable?
Do you have a flat rate for calls to the Swiss telephone network? Then calls to 058 numbers are usually free of charge for you. Otherwise, most network providers charge the standard rate for calls to the Swiss network.

Some businesses offer both an 0848 hotline and a 058 number. If you have a flat rate and are in Switzerland, calling the 058 number is free of charge for you. For 0848 numbers, a rate of a maximum of 8.1 rappen per minute (incl. VAT) applies.
5. Why do companies use 058 numbers?
A company using an 058 number lets you know that you can contact somebody in Switzerland, if necessary. The area code, however, does not disclose where the company’s employees or customer service are located.
