Things you need to know about your new health insurance in Switzerland

Here’s how health insurance works in Switzerland:

  • A basic health insurance policy is compulsory for everyone and covers basic health care.
  • In addition, you can take out voluntary supplemental insurance to extend the protection according to your individual needs.

Important deadlines and obligations:

  • Anyone living in Switzerland must take out health insurance within three months of arrival.
  • There’s no benefit in delaying. You have to pay the premiums retroactively from the first month of residence.
  • If the deadline is missed, a premium surcharge may be applied. In addition, the insurance cover only applies from the date the policy is taken out.

Anyone living or working in Switzerland must take out basic insurance. It covers basic medical care in the event of illness, accident and maternity. You have a free choice of provider. All health insurers are required by law to accept every applicant for basic insurance.

Basic insurance benefits are precisely defined in the Health Insurance Act and the related ordinances. For this reason, they are always the same – irrespective of insurer. However, the premiums for the same benefits vary from insurer to insurer and depending on where you live. Find out what benefits are covered by basic insurance.
Supplemental insurance covers costs for treatments and benefits that are not covered by basic insurance. The supplementary insurance policies and premiums offered may differ from insurer to insurer. In the case of supplementary insurance, health insurers may impose conditions or reject admission without giving reasons.
The average monthly premium in 2025 is 378.70 francs. However, the actual premiums differ depending on your age, place of residence, deductible and insurance model.
On average, premiums for 2025 are highest in the cantons of Geneva, Ticino and Basel-Stadt. The cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Uri and Obwalden have the lowest average premiums in 2025.
Anyone employed at least eight hours per week by a single employer or registered with the regional employment centre is automatically insured under the Accident Insurance Act against accidents. Everyone else must include accident cover in their basic insurance.
You do not necessarily have to take out basic and supplemental insurance with the same health insurance provider. However, separate insurance policies may incur administration fees. You may also lose out on special deals such as family or collective discounts. Read these tips on taking out basic and supplemental insurance with different providers.
Health insurers offer a range of benefits. Therefore, what may be considered the best health insurance depends on your personal needs.

The Comparis Label provides an important indication of customer satisfaction. In this context, we survey 4,500 policyholders every year about their satisfaction with their health insurance.
