Persons residing in Switzerland for the purposes of education or further education and training, notably students, interns or trainees, may submit a request to the competent cantonal authorities to be exempt from mandatory basic health insurance for a maximum of 3 years. Exemption from mandatory insurance is only possible for individuals who have equivalent insurance coverage from their country of origin for the whole validity period of the exemption. A written confirmation with the necessary information from the foreign authority in charge has to be sent along with the request. See: Health Insurance Ordinance (KVV), Art. 2, Para. 4 (available in German, French and Italian).
comparis.ch recommends a comparison as the mandatory Swiss basic insurance might turn out to be cheaper than an equivalent insurance from the country of origin.
