First steps to finding the right apartment
Before you set up a search alert on comparis.ch, we would like to provide you with some useful pieces of information. First consider how much money your are willing to spend on your new home. Generally, the rent should not exceed one fourth of your monthly net income. Then, you should think about what you are looking for; what is important to you and what can you do without? We have put together a few additional considerations that might help you:
- How far away may your new home be from your place of work?
- What features should already be there when you move in (e.g. lift, fireplace, balcony, etc.)?
- Are pets allowed?
- If you have children, how far away from home is the school?
- What kinds of shops are nearby?
- Are there enough recreational areas within easy reach (forest, mountains, lakes or rivers)?
- What is the infrastructure like in the neighbourhood? (pubs, restaurants, cinemas, gyms, bars, etc.)
- Is noise exposure a relevant criterion for you?
Watch out! Cantonal differences
Looking for the right home takes a lot of time. You should first get an overview of the individual regions in order to make your house hunting as efficient as possible. If you rent an apartment in the canton of Zurich or an apartment in the canton of Aargau, you should be aware of the differences. Each canton has its pros and cons.
Did you know, for example, that taxes in some cantons are three times as high as in others? Or do you know in which canton you are likely to pay the highest rent? Switzerland and its 26 cantons are very diverse. There are quite a few differences between the cantons. This is why it is important to read up on the subject before starting your house hunt in order to make the best choice.
As Switzerland is rather small, many people don't live in the same canton as they work. In the city of Zurich, for example, many employees live in the surrounding cantons of Schaffhausen, Aargau and Schwyz. We have studied the 26 Swiss cantons and compiled the most important information on the housing market for you.
