2. Electric SUVs: what’s unique about these cars?

An E-SUV is an electric sport utility vehicle.

It’s characterized by its bulky design and increased ground clearance. This refers to the distance between the underside of the vehicle and the road surface.

Driving an electric SUV is environmentally friendly and efficient. Plus, depending on the model, electric SUVs can also handle difficult terrain.

Here are the key features:

  • Spacious and comfortable: a key feature of electric SUVs is their generous amount of space.

  • Efficient and environmentally friendly: electric SUVs combine the efficiency and environmental performance of an electric car with the practical benefits of an SUV.

  • High load capacity: many SUVs have a high load capacity. This makes them ideal for towing trailers, boats or caravans.

  • Elevated seating position: the high seating position gives you a good overview when driving. It’s also easier to get in the vehicle.

  • More ground clearance: electric SUVs usually offer more ground clearance than saloon cars. This makes it easier to drive on uneven terrain and off-road.

  • Lower running costs: E-SUVs usually have slightly higher price tags. Having said that, the running costs are usually lower than those of comparable combustion vehicles.

3. Are SUVs suitable for off-road use?

Some manufacturers of electric SUVs advertise that their vehicles are particularly suitable for off-road use. However, not all SUVs are actually able to handle off-road.

How well a car behaves off-road depends, among other things, on the following aspects:

  • Tyres

  • Reduction gears

  • All-wheel drive

  • Reinforced chassis

  • Powerful engine

  • Differential lock

  • Ground clearance

Many electric SUVs offer all-wheel drive (4×4), but not all. The term SUV has nothing to do with the drive system. What SUVs have in common are a bulky design and increased ground clearance.

4. What should I keep in mind before buying an electric SUV?

Some electric SUVs differ greatly in terms of equipment, energy consumption and range. Ask these questions before buying:

Efficiency: how high is the energy consumption?

Electric SUVs are usually more efficient than petrol or diesel SUVs. Depending on the model, SUV electric cars consume around 14–20kWh per 100km under normal driving conditions. Depending on the charging station, this will cost between 5–18 francs.

Charging times: how long do charging breaks last?

Most electric SUVs are charged to 80% after 30–40 minutes at a fast-charging station. The charging capacity depends on factors such as the charging station, the battery size and the temperature. Check the manufacturer’s specifications before buying.

Range: how far can I drive on a single charge?

Many electric SUVs offer long ranges – sometimes over 500km. These models manage particularly long ranges (depending on the version):

5. How much does an electric SUV cost?

The prices for electric SUVs vary depending on the model and equipment.

Compare different models and their features to find the best value for money. You can save a substantial amount of money by purchasing a used car.

In addition to the purchase costs, you should also consider the running costs. It turns out that E-SUVs are cheaper to run than comparable petrol or diesel vehicles.

How much does car insurance cost for an e-SUV?

Car insurance for E-SUVs is usually cheaper than policies for combustion SUVs. With Comparis, you can compare premiums and policy benefits and save money.
