Switching motorcycle insurance

Do you want to switch insurance? It doesn’t have to be complicated. Comparis explains when you can cancel your motorcycle insurance and how to save money.

3 steps to your new motorcycle insurance

1. Compare premiums and save

If you compare different offers and change your insurance provider, you can benefit from new and cheaper premiums.

2. Cancel your policy on time

If no notice of cancellation is given, an existing contract is automatically renewed for another year. For that reason, you should make sure to cancel your insurance policy before the cancellation deadline. Most companies that offer motorcycle insurance have a period of notice of three months. On comparis.ch, you can request a free cancellation reminder. comparis.ch will send you an e-mail to remind you in time to cancel your motorcycle insurance.

In addition, you can change insurance in the following cases: if the premium is raised, following a claim that the insurer had to cover, or in case of a change of vehicle and/or keeper. Use our template for the cancellation letter.

3. Choose a short contract period

A one-year contract allows you to stay flexible. If this is not an option with your insurer, you can negotiate the right to cancel the contract on a yearly basis. This is another way for you to be able to benefit from new, low prices. The years of accident-free driving will be credited to your new insurance policy.

When and how can I switch motorcycle insurance?

It is possible to switch to a different insurer in the following cases:

1. At the end of the contract

The duration of insurance cover is defined in the policy. Note that if you don't cancel your existing policy in time, it is usually automatically renewed for another year. Why not sign up to receive a free cancellation reminder?

2. Change of vehicle

If you buy a new motorcycle, you have the option of switching insurance. The remaining premium for the deregistered motorcycle will be refunded to you.

3. Premium change

If your insurer notifies you that the premium amount or the general insurance conditions will change in the next insurance year, you are entitled to cancel the policy by giving notice to the end of the insurance year.

4. Change of keeper

New keepers of a motorcycle can cancel the contract within 14 days of the change, otherwise the contract will expire automatically when the new keeper registers the motorcycle with the Road Traffic Office.

5. In the event of a claim

After any claim that is paid by the insurer, both parties are entitled to cancel the contract.

Tips for saving on motorcycle insurance

To deposit the number plate over winter or to waive suspension?

Signing a "waiver of suspension" means that the number plate is not deposited during winter. The premium is paid for the whole year – i.e. also in winter when you hardly use your motorcycle. For this, you are granted a discount of 25 to 30 percent.

If you always put your motorcycle away during winter, your should better go for the option of depositing your plates. Usually, you would save more on premiums this way.

Lower premium thanks to deductible

You can choose your deductible for casco insurance yourself and thus lower your premium. However, the premium reduction is not very substantial.

Current value versus replacement value supplement

Some providers offer reduced premiums if you insure your motorcycle at current value only. However, bear in mind that a motorcycle loses considerable value over the first few years. In case of a write-off, only the current value is reimbursed. This sum is much less than what you would need to buy a new motorcycle.

Choose the right endorsements

The leaner your insurance policy, the cheaper it is. You should therefore carefully consider which endorsements you really need. For example, the bonus protection coverage prevents its holder from being placed in a higher bonus level following an accident. Check by how much your premium would increase in case of a claim. If the increase is only small, this endorsement does not pay off. Do you want your insurance to pay if you have a fall or if your motorcycle clothing gets damaged or stolen?

Adjust insurance coverage when motorcycle gets older

Full casco insurance only pays off in the first years, afterwards partial casco insurance is enough. You should also check any other endorsements. The expensive coverage for damage while parked only makes sense for new motorcycles.
