2. Health insurance premiums in 2025: reasons for the increase

Comparis health expert Felix Schneuwly sees three reasons for the sharp increase in premiums: “There’s a need to catch up on politically enforced reserve reductions, plus the increasing consumption of insured medical services and inflation.”

This third consecutive premium shock is putting many policyholders in a difficult financial situation. “This is especially true for families who have not yet received an individual premium reduction,” says Schneuwly. That’s because mortgage rates, rents, energy and food prices have also risen in recent years.

3. Efficiency and quality need to be more worthwhile

In June 2024, the Swiss electorate rejected the “cost brake” initiative. According to Felix Schneuwly, there is still a need for action: efficiency and quality should be more worthwhile than quantity.

“"It’s important that parliament gives health insurers and medical service providers more leeway for alternative insurance models in the Health Insurance Act.”

He calls for more flexibility in alternative insurance models (AIM). These include, for example, voluntary multi-year contracts or independently calculated premiums for AIM products. You can find details of Comparis’ proposals here (not available in English).
