1. Cancelling basic insurance: downloadable template

With certain exceptions, you can cancel compulsory health insurance with effect from the end of the year. Your health insurer must receive your cancellation letter by the last working day of November. The postmark date on the letter is not decisive.

It’s best to send the cancellation letter by registered post. This way, you have legally binding proof of delivery.

If it’s already too late to send a registered letter, you can also take the cancellation letter to your insurer in person. Make sure you get confirmation that you handed the letter in.

2. Cancelling supplemental insurance: downloadable template

The cancellation dates for supplemental insurance vary depending on the health insurer. Often, the health insurer must receive the cancellation form by 30 September.

Good to know: do not cancel your existing supplemental insurance too early. You should wait for confirmation of acceptance from the new insurer first. This is because, unlike with basic insurance, the new health insurer may refuse to accept you for supplemental insurance.

3. How do I write a cancellation letter to my health insurer?

You should provide the following information in the cancellation letter:

  • Your full name, address and insurance number

  • The name and address of the health insurer

  • A declaration that you are cancelling the insurance on the due date

  • The place, date and your handwritten signature

4. Military and civilian service: letter template for suspending basic insurance

If you take part in military or civilian service for more than 60 consecutive days, you can suspend your basic insurance for the period of your service. You can download a template letter for suspending your insurance here.
