Das Lindenquartier wurde vergleichsweise spät erschlossen. Zunächst prägten Rebberge das Gelände, bevor nach und nach Bauernhäuser entstanden. Das Gebiet gehörte zum Dorf Madretsch, das um 1920 zuerst mit Mett zusammengeschlossen und wenige Jahre später in die Stadt Biel eingegliedert wurde. Erst der Bau des neuen Bahnhofs und die veränderte Linienführung führten dazu, dass das Quartier allmählich mit der Stadt verwuchs.
