Home care / in-home care services must be prescribed by a doctor. There are three categories: a) needs assessment, advice and coordination, b) examination and treatment, and c) basic care. These services (unlike day-to-day help and support) are all covered by basic health insurance. They can be provided by Spitex organizations or self-employed nursing professionals.

Home care

Nursing home care (also called ambulatory care) is provided only when ordered by or on behalf of a physician.

There are three categories:

  1. (Needs) clarification, consultation and coordination

  2. Examination and treatment as well as

  3. Basic care, which (in contrast to care and assistance in everyday life) are all subject to compulsory insurance. They can be provided by Spitex organizations as well as by freelance nursing professionals.

Typical care services include:

  • Basic care such as help with getting up, lying down and walking, dressing and undressing, eating and drinking and personal and dental hygiene

  • Treatment care such as the preparation and administration of medications, skin rubs, bandages, eye drops, blood pressure measurement, pulse checks, blood sampling or wound care

  • Needs assessment, consulting and coordination

Spitex organizations charge different rates depending on the care and support services provided. Costs for care services are largely covered by health insurance and the canton/municipality.

Care costs are covered by health insurance.

The maximum patient contribution for care at home is CHF 5'603 per year or CHF 15.95 per day. In addition, patients must pay their deductible (max. CHF 2'500 per year) and 10% of their retention (max. CHF 700 per year). In total, the total cost of care at home, including deductible and co-payment, amounts to a maximum of CHF 8'803 per year. The patient contribution may be lower, depending on the municipality or canton.
