Travel medicine deals with prevention (prophylaxis), e.g. through vaccinations, diagnosis and treatment of diseases that are acquired while travelling. Travel medicine overlaps with tropical medicine, which deals with the prevention, combat and epidemiology of diseases that occur predominantly or exclusively in the subtropics and tropics or are spread from there.
Specialists in travel and tropical medicine give advice prior to travel, especially with regard to vaccinations (e.g. yellow fever, rabies, hepatitis A) and prescribe prophylaxis (preventative medicines, e.g. for malaria). They treat travellers who have returned, e.g. for malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever and parasitic disease.
