Pneumology, General internal medicine
Pneumology is a branch of internal medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of diseases affecting the lungs and the respiratory system.
Diseases treated by pneumologists (lung specialists) include asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic-obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), mucoviscidosis (cystic fibrosis), pulmonary hypertension and tumours in the lungs or pleura. For example, they perform endoscopies (internal examination of the airways and rib cage), inhalation therapy and sleep studies (e.g. in cases of sleep apnoea or insomnia).
