Neurology focuses on prophylaxis, diagnosis and (non-surgical) therapy for diseases of the nervous system. This includes the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), its surrounding structures and blood supply vessels, the peripheral nervous system and musculature, including the connecting structures between the two.
Neurologists treat diseases such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and dementia, and investigate dizziness and chronic headaches. They also focus on peripheral nerve damage (e.g. nerve compression syndrome), inflammatory nerve disorders (e.g. polyneuropathy) and state when surgical interventions on the spine are indicated.
