Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS or also craniomaxillofacial surgery) is a branch of surgery that deals with functional and aesthetic issues relating to the teeth, mouth, jaw and face. It covers the treatment of injury, disease (e.g. tumours), deformities and disproportion in this area.
Maxillofacial surgeons treat tumours, fractures of the jaw and inflammation of the teeth and jawbone. The conduct plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery and operate on cleft lip and palate. In addition, they treat changes in the oral mucous membranes and deformation of the back of the head in adults and children.
