Dermatologists focus on skin disease. They treat changes and diseases affecting the skin and the mucous membranes in proximity to the skin. Venereology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. The two branches form a broad specialist medical field that covers all skin diseases.
Dermatologists treat diseases including skin cancer, acne and rosacea, psoriasis, hair and nail disease (e.g. nail fungus, hair loss) and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). Venereologists specialize in the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, genital warts, chlamydia and hepatitis B.
