Chiropractors diagnose and treat functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially of the spine and pelvis.
Certain forms of neck and back pain and some pain radiating into the arms or legs. Some examples are lumbago, stiff neck, rib blockages, tennis elbow or heel pain. Also treated are certain forms of dizziness and headaches and other muscular and joint complaints.
The therapy often consists of mobilisations and manipulations with or without impulse. Ergonomic advice in sports or at the workplace (e.g. chair, table and computer settings) also plays an important role. If necessary, x-rays, laboratory analyses or other diagnostic measures can be prescribed. There is a close cooperation with other specialists, but also with primary care providers and physiotherapists.
Chiropractors are required to pass a 6-year university Master's programme in chiropractic medicine, followed by an optional doctorate. For more than 10 years, this undergraduate education can now also be completed in Switzerland. The subsequent postgraduate education period is two and a half years.
