Specialists in general internal medicine or general practitioners are the main contacts in primary health care for adolescents, adults and elderly patients. Their knowledge of medicine is broad and they refer patients to specialists, as required.
General practitioners cover a broad spectrum of diseases. These include wound care and stitching, allergy tests, vaccinations and advice on vaccinations, traffic medicine and occupational health assessments, small surgical interventions, ultrasound, X-rays, tests conducted in the in-house laboratory, hearing and visual tests, lung function tests, blood pressure measurement, infusion therapies (e.g. for iron deficiency), tests on fitness to drive and geriatric treatment.
Hospital-based specialists in internal general medicine, also called general internists, are specialized in making differential diagnoses on complex, ambiguous disorders and proposing treatment. This includes the treatment of patients with multiple different diseases (multimorbidity).
