Gastroenterology is a branch of internal medicine that deals with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and the endocrine glands associated with the digestive tract. This includes the organs connected to the digestive tract, such as the pancreas, gall bladder and liver.
Diseases treated by gastroenterologists include coeliac disease (gluten intolerance), chronic inflammatory bowel disease (autoimmune disease), such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, liver disease (cirrhosis of the liver, hepatitis) and tumours in the gastrointestinal tract.
