Change of ownership

With a change of ownership, rights and obligations from the existing liability insurance transfer to the new owner. The new owner may cancel this policy within 14 days after taking over ownership.

The liability insurance is terminated if the new owner obtains a proof of insurance from another provider and uses this to register the car at the Road Traffic Office. Casco insurance (comprehensive with or without collision cover) ends on the date of transfer of ownership. The premium is refunded proportionally.

Tip:
If a vehicle is more than 10 years old, it must be inspected prior to a change of ownership. In most cantons this also applies if the last inspection took place more than one year ago. The new owner must get the change recorded as soon as possible in the vehicle registration certificate.
