1. How does the internet speed test work?
The speed test determines the speed and connection quality of your broadband connection. Several tests run simultaneously in just a few seconds.
The speed test analyses these values:
MBit test on downloads: Speed of data transmission when downloading data. Reported in megabits per second (Mbps/MBits/s)
MBit test on upload: Speed of data transfer when uploading data. Reported in megabits per second (Mbps/MBits/s)
Ping: During the ping test, the device sends a small data packet over the network to the test server. After receiving this packet, the server sends the data packet back to the device – making a complete “round trip”. The time required by the data packet for this round trip is reported as latency or ping.
Jitter: This value shows the time difference between receiving two data packets. The smaller the value, the better the performance.
To obtain the most accurate result possible, you should connect your computer directly to your router with a network cable, not over Wi-Fi.
Also, turn off your Wi-Fi. This will tell you the actual speed of your internet connection. Before testing, make sure your operating system and browser are up to date. Make sure there are also no pending updates.
Internet speed also depends on the device. Surfing on a smartphone is usually not as fast as on a laptop or PC. Any installed software and its current version can also affect the test results.
carry out the speed test on multiple difference devices and web browsers.
2. How can an internet speed test help me?
A speed test checks if you are receiving the service that you pay for from your internet provider.
However, the provider isn’t always at fault. Technical problems may prevent your internet speeds reaching those stated in your plan. If this is the case, it may be worth switching to a cheaper plan with lower speeds.
3. Which internet plan is right for me?
Firstly, consider what internet speed you need for your personal use at home.
Are you opting for a high-speed plan? These connections are usually very powerful, but tend to be a bit more expensive.
Is high-speed internet not (yet) possible in your home? Or are you already satisfied with a moderate speed connection? If so, you are better off choosing a cheaper, but slower, plan.
Maximum speed thanks to fibre optic connection
A fibre optic connection usually lets you reach the highest internet speeds. Not every household in Switzerland has such a connection. Check whether a fibre optic connection is available at your address.
