Public transport

Switzerland has an excellent public transport network. Whether travelling by train, tram, bus or boat: many people use public transport and do entirely without a car. But what types of tickets are there? When is it worth buying a travel pass? And how does the SBB mobile app work with EasyRide? Here you can find all the important information you need to get started.

Tip

EasyRide is not only worthwhile in terms of price, it also makes travelling easier.

This function in the SBB app eliminates the need to buy tickets in advance – just check in, embark and check out at your destination. The app automatically calculates the cheapest rate. Combined with a half-fare travel card, you also benefit from a 50% discount on fares.

How do I calculate whether a travel pass is worthwhile?

1. Calculate your total monthly public transport costs
  • Calculate the cost of all scheduled single tickets (with and without a half-fare travel card) for a typical month.
  • If you often travel by different means of transport, include bus or tram costs.

2. Compare with the cost of a travel pass. Example: A GA travel pass costs about 322 francs per month (2nd class). A network pass for all routes within the canton of Zurich costs 247 francs (2nd class).
  • If your journeys with a half-fare travel card or single tickets are more expensive, it’s worth buying a travel pass.

For example:
  • Daily commuter route Zurich–Bern (half-fare single journey: CHF 26.50)
  • 20 journeys per month = CHF 530 (with half-fare travel card)
  • The GA travel pass only costs CHF 322 per month – offering clear savings.

Practical tips for public transport in Switzerland

  • Always check the cheapest ticket: you can compare best prices with the SBB app. Tip: use supersaver tickets. These can save you up to 70% on selected connections.
  • Use the night-time transport network: larger cities offer night buses and night trains – ideal for night owls.
  • Note the regional transport networks: in cities such as Zurich or Geneva, there are special plans that can be cheaper than the GA travel pass.
  • Avoid fines: if you travel without a valid ticket, you’ll have to pay high fines – so make sure you have a ticket before you travel!
