Supplemental hospital insurance provides extra cover (on top of basic insurance) for hospital stays. Basic insurance only covers stays in a multi-bed room in the canton of residence. Supplemental insurance also covers hospital stays outside the canton of residence and – if insured – stays in a single or two-bed room.

Policyholders only choose a hospital ward upon admission
Significantly lower premiums
Note: if you choose a general ward, your health insurer normally covers all costs irrespective of location in Switzerland. If you choose a semi-private or private ward, however, your health insurer only covers a previously specified amount or percentage of the cost.

Tips for expectant mothers

Note that there is a waiting period for supplemental hospital insurance. Once you have taken the insurance out, cover often only takes effect after 360 days. Contact your insurer for more information.
