1. Paint over old wall paint

Don’t like the colour of your walls anymore and want to give your home a new look? To do this, you don’t necessarily have to remove the existing wall paint. You can simply paint it over. You’ll save time and money.

Use an opaque colour, i.e. a colour with a high pigment density. This ensures that the old colour does not show through.

2. Removing wall paint: methods

Are there are already many layers of old paint on the wall? If so, it’s worth removing the old wall paint before repainting. Old emulsion paint cannot be repainted indefinitely.

There are different ways to remove old paint from the walls. These include:

Scraping the wall paint

On a smooth wall surface , you can usually remove paint with a scraper. However, you need a lot of perseverance and patience for this. It is best to use a sharp, sturdy scraper.

Sanding down wall paint

You can also remove wall paint using a sanding machine. This procedure is also only suitable for smooth wall surfaces. Sanding paint off requires a lot of manual skill in addition to the right tools. Working with a sanding machine is noisy, dangerous and dusty. It’s best to leave this work to a professional.

Please note: care should be taken when sanding down old wall paints – in buildings built before 1990, there may be asbestos. Asbestos fibres can be released when the walls are sanded down. Therefore, you should have a professional asbestos analysis carried out before starting the work.

Knocking off wall paint

Do you want to remove all layers of paint from a wall? If so, you can knock off the wall paint. This not only removes the paint, but also the plaster base. Before you can repaint the wall, you need to replaster it. To get a smooth surface, however, you need a lot of experience. It’s best to leave this work to a professional.

Dissolve the wall paint with water

Were your walls painted with water-based paints? If so, you can usually remove the paint with water. It is best to use lukewarm water, a sponge and a brush. This allows you to remove the wall paint piece by piece. This method requires a lot of patience and can be physically demanding.

Removing wall paint with a hot air gun

Has your wall been painted with acrylic, paint or latex paint? If so, you can heat the wall paint with a hot air gun. The heat separates the paint from the substrate. You can then remove these with a spatula.

Please note: when using this method, the surface must not be flammable, as the paint is heated to a high temperature. Heat-resistant surfaces are, for example, metal or stone.

Removing wall paint with solvent

If you have not achieved the desired results with the other methods, you can try chemical paint removers. Sodium hydroxide solution or potassium hydroxide solution is often used for this purpose. Apply the solution to the wall with a brush and let it take effect. Then wipe the paint away with water.

This method should be the last choice as it is harmful to the environment and your health

Removing wall paint: protect yourself properly

When removing wall paint, harmful by-products such as fine dust or toxic fumes may be produced. Therefore, always protect yourself with a breathing mask, goggles and work gloves. In addition, ventilate the rooms regularly.

3. Removing wall paint: challenges

Removing wall paints can be a challenging task. This is especially true for stubborn paints such as emulsion or sensitive surfaces such as wood. Find out here how to deal with these challenges:

How can I remove emulsion paint?

Emulsion paint forms a solid, resistant layer on the wall and adheres well to various surfaces. This makes removing emulsion paint tedious.

Emulsion paint is water-based. This means you can first try to remove the wall paint with water. If the paint cannot be removed in this way, you can try sanding. It may even be necessary to remove the paint with solvent.

How can I remove old paint from wood?

Scraping or sanding are suitable for removing old paint from wood surfaces. If this does not achieve the desired result, you can also use solvents.

Do you only want to remove small splashes of paint from wood? Put some linseed oil on a cloth and place it on the affected area for about a minute. After that, you can try carefully removing the paint with a spatula.

4. Removing paint stains from clothes

Have you discovered a fresh paint stain on your clothes? Then it’s best to act immediately.

  • Soak the affected area with water and a mild detergent.

  • After a few minutes, you can wash out the paint stain with cold water.

  • Repeat this process if the paint has not been removed.

Did you only notice the stain once the paint has already dried?

  • Soak the affected area in water – the longer, the better.

  • Apply a mild detergent to the affected area and leave it on for a few minutes.

  • Gently rub the paint stain with a clean cloth.

  • For stubborn stains, you can also use home remedies such as baking soda, lemon juice or vinegar. Apply the home remedy to the affected area and let it act briefly. Then you can rinse it with cold water.

  • After treatment, wash the clothes in the washing machine as usual.

5. Removing wall paint: summary

Choosing the right method for removing wall paint depends on the base layer and the type of paint. Painting over old paint is a quick and often sufficient solution. The complete removal of the wall paint requires more effort and manual skill

Whether levelling, sanding or removing with solvent – always protect yourself with a respirator, goggles and gloves. For demanding work, it makes sense to consult a professional.
