Every year, tens of thousands of bicycles are stolen in Switzerland. Home contents insurance will not always cover the loss. Comparis explains what to watch out for.

In Switzerland, bicycles are a popular target for thieves, with between 30,000 and 40,000 bikes being snatched each year. Once stolen, they almost always disappear, never to be seen again. Comparis explains how to avoid becoming a victim of cycle theft:

  • What insurance do I need to cover my bike against theft?
  • How much is the sum insured in bicycle insurance?
  • My bike is expensive – do I need valuables insurance?
  • Do I have to report the bike theft to the police?
  • How do I insure my e-bike?

  • What insurance do I need to cover my bike against theft?

Cycle theft is covered under home contents insurance. However, the basic insurance package only covers theft from home, and bikes are usually stolen elsewhere. Contents insurance only pays out in this case if you have taken out additional cover for simple theft away from home.

How much is the sum insured in bicycle insurance?

The sum insured for simple theft away from home is defined separately. It is commonly 2,000 francs with a deductible of 200 francs. Depending on the insurer and the product, you may be able to choose from different sums insured and deductibles.

My bike is expensive – do I need valuables insurance?

Check whether your insurance policy covers the replacement value of sports equipment and bicycles. In the event of a claim, replacement value cover ensures that the cost of the same bicycle or one of equivalent value is reimbursed, minus the deductible – regardless of the age of the bike. If you have an expensive bicycle, it's worth considering a special policy or all-risk cover. This typically also includes any damage caused by yourself, as well as other risks.

Do I have to report the bike theft to the police?

Always report a bike theft to the police and inform your insurer of the loss immediately. Most insurers will refuse to pay out if the police have not been notified. Tip: make a note of the frame serial number. This is important for helping the police trace stolen bicycles.

How do I insure my e-bike?

Unlike traditional bicycles, e-bikes are not automatically included in the home contents cover of all insurance companies. The type of liability and theft cover you can get depends primarily on how powerful the motor is.
