After the first matriculation most vehicles must pass a test by law - the motor vehicle check (MFK). The test assesses whether a vehicle fulfills legal safety requirements. The cantonal vehicle and driver registration offices (Strassenverkehrsamt) perform the check at certain intervals. The following intervals apply for cars and motorcycles:

1st Check: 4 years after the first matriculation

2nd Check: 3 years after the first check

Thereafter: every 2 years.

A change of owner does not affect the time the test is due during the first 10 years. If, upon change of owner, the vehicle and driver registration office ascertains that a vehicle was given a permit more than 10 years previously and the last check was more than a year ago, the vehicle will be summoned to a test following matriculation.
