FAQ
A special plan for children can be taken out for those aged between 7 and 18. All the major providers offer a range of options.
Check whether the plan includes free, unlimited calls and some mobile data.
It is a myth that prepaid deals give parents better control. Special child modes are available on both Android and iPhone devices. These modes allow you to control what the child can access and limit Internet time.
It is important to consider what your child needs. Will your child be able to make enough phone calls to contact you and other caregivers on a prepaid deal? Does your child want to be able to browse the web and use services like WhatsApp, Facebook or streaming services? If so, a kid-friendly mobile plan might be more suitable than a prepaid deal.
If the phone is for very young children and only for emergencies, a prepaid deal is recommended.
When it comes to mobile phones, younger children are not yet fully aware of the relationship between costs and benefits. Some plans allow you to restrict outgoing calls to preset numbers, such as those of the child's parents or other caregivers. There should be an option to define a cost limit so as to avoid unpleasant surprises at the end of the month.
The most common data plans offer a monthly data volume of 1 GB, 4 GB or unlimited data. 1 GB of mobile data is enough to read news articles and e-mails and for writing WhatsApp messages. Users of social media will find 1 to 4 GB of mobile data sufficient. If you listen to music for several hours at a time, you'll need at least 4 GB. If you like to stream videos and films on YouTube and Netflix or surf on your laptop using your mobile phone hotspot, an unlimited deal is your best bet.
Here are some examples of data usage as a guide:
- Social media: 300 MB for 30 minutes
- Watching a football match while out and about: 6 GB
- Watching Netflix with low-quality resolution: 250 MB
- Sending a WhatsApp text message of 200 characters: 1 KB
- Sending a photo via WhatsApp: up to 90 KB
- Sending a WhatsApp voice message: 0.3 MB per minute
So depending on your usage, you may need anything from very little mobile data to an unlimited, flat-rate deal. Such flat-rate deals give you unlimited data in Switzerland and even abroad if necessary.
