A data plan allows you to use mobile Internet. In other words, you can use the Internet on your laptop, tablet or smartphone while you are out and about. You can also take out a data plan for a mobile network router for your Internet at home.

Fast Internet speeds are required for gaming, watching high-resolution videos or using your phone as a hotspot for your laptop. Slower Internet speeds are fine for sending e-mails or chat messages.

Data usage does not depend on the device, but on how actively you use the network. On the most popular social media platforms, you will use around 200 MB in 30 minutes. If you decide to watch a football match on your smartphone while out and about, you may need up to 6 GB depending on the streaming quality. Streaming a Netflix video in low-quality resolution will use around 250 MB of mobile data. On WhatsApp, usage depends on whether you send a text message (1 KB per 200 characters), a photo (up to 90 KB) or a voice message (0.3 MB per minute).

Depending on your usage, you may need anything from very little mobile data to an unlimited, flat-rate deal. Such flat-rate deals give you unlimited data in Switzerland and even abroad if necessary.

Your provider will notify you as soon as you have used up your data allowance. Some providers may limit your Internet speed. You have the option of purchasing another data package, or data packages may be added automatically up to a defined price limit.
