FAQ
If you want fast data transfer speeds (e.g. to surf the Internet on your laptop via your smartphone), it's worth getting a 5G plan. 5G is also a good idea if you want to use your mobile phone to access the Internet at home. Before taking out this plan, make sure that 5G coverage is available in the places where you most often spend your time.
Swisscom and Sunrise launched their 5G networks in spring 2019 and had covered around 90% of the population by the beginning of 2021. Salt only started to roll out its 5G mobile network in mid-2020. It will take a few more years for the 5G networks in Switzerland to reach the same coverage as the existing 4G technology.
5G is the latest generation of mobile technology and a global standard. Compared to 4G, 5G networks enable significantly faster Internet speeds. Depending on network coverage and the distance from the tower, 5G phones can allow you to surf up to ten times faster than 4G phones.
Currently, only Sunrise, Swisscom and Salt offer 5G plans. They are available as a flat-rate subscription and are more expensive than 4G plans.
Not all devices are 5G-ready. Check the device information or packaging to see if it can receive 5G signals, particularly if your smartphone or other device is older. Premium smartphones launched after 2020 support 5G.
