At present, only Swisscom provides fixed network lines in Switzerland. An analogue connection
costs CHF 25.25, an ISDN connection CHF 43.00 per month.
While fixed network connections are only available through Swisscom, there are many
different providers for telephony. You can chose a single provider through which you
make your calls as a standard and automatically. But you can also phone with different providers.
In order to do so, dial the according five-digit code before dialing the actual phone number.
There are places where the local TV cable net providers, e.g. Cablecom, offer telephony services.
Ask your landlord and the local cable net provider for information.
Tip: Find out with the comparisons by comparis.ch with which providers you can phone cheaply.

allocate you a phone number.
Use the comparisons by comparis.ch to find out which provider is cheapest for you and
register online straight away.
If you make phone calls with another provider than Swisscom, the chosen provider
takes care of the formalities with Swisscom. Your phone number does not change.

Internet telephony, also called Voice over IP (VoIP), is a fairly new technology. Phone calls
are made through the Internet. There can be differences in quality.
The main advantages of Internet telephony are the (usually) low price as well as the
possibility of being reachable cheaply worldwide.

There are various subscription offers. The subscriptions are made - depending on the offer -
for a period of 12 or 24 months. Please note: After expiration of duration time the subscriptions
are automatically renewed for another year.
Prepaid offers are more flexible, as there are no contractual obligations bound to them. For
calls abroad there are interesting offers, e.g. from Yallo or Lebara.
The calls are pre-paid. The credit can be loaded in many shops (e.g. Coop, Migros), at kiosks
or at train ticket vending machines.

Plese ask your landlord or local cable net provider if you can use Internet via cable.
Fast data transfer for a monthly inclusive price. Various providers offer ADSL.
Please note: Generally one has to obligate oneself to surf via ADSL for at least 12 months.
The necessary modems are usually given out for free. Often though in this case the obligation
