Compulsory health insurance
After entering Switzerland, you have 3 months time to register with a health insurance company. You are then retroactively insured from the date of entry.
Compulsory basic insurance has to be taken out by all persons living in Switzerland – i.e. also immigrants. The basic insurance covers all medically necessary treatments. The benefits are required by law (KVG) and therefore the same with each insurance company. However, depending on the insurance company, the premiums can vary strongly. The amount of premium depends on the place of residence, the age, the provider – but also on the amount of retention, the so-called deductible rate. The higher the selected deductible rate the lower the monthly premium.
The supplementary insurances are optional. There are hospital supplementary insurances (semi-private or private ward and general ward within the whole of Switzerland) as well as outpatient supplementary insurances (alternative medicine, glasses and contact lenses, tooth treatments, etc.). The benefits and premiums vary, depending on the insurance provider.
