Salaries
A standard statement on the salary amounts in Switzerland can hardly be made. It is important to know that your salary is usually a negotiable matter (within a certain scale).
Even though according to law, Swiss employers have to pay the same salaries to women and men, the average salaries of women are still lower than those of men, independent from qualification and hierarchy level.
Example salaries
Working hours
Your working hours depend on your employer, your job and your industry sector. Working hours are usually defined in the contract of employment.
Swiss law limits working hours to a weekly maximum of 45 hours for industrial workers, office workers, technical staff and other staff such as marketing staff and sales assistants. For all other employees the maximal working hours are 50 hours per week.
In 2007, the average working time in Swiss companies was 41.7 hours a week (Source: Federal Statistical Office).
Regardless of your job and industry sector you should therefore calculate longer working hours in Switzerland than in your home country.
Holidays
According to Swiss law, all employees and apprentices have a minimal annual entitlement to holidays. The minimum is
- Four weeks for employees over 20 years of age
- Five weeks for employees up to 20 years of age
