Every insurance policy has its own cancellation rights and deadlines, which you must observe when terminating the policy. The precise arrangements depend on the policy and the insurer and are detailed in the general conditions of insurance.

If you cancel your policy as described above, this is known as a statutory cancellation

In some situations, you can also cancel a policy outside the statutory notice period for particular reasons. In health insurance, for example, you are allowed to cancel if the insurer raises its premiums across the board. In car insurance, you can cancel after making a claim that is covered by your policy.

Your cancellation notice must usually be provided in writing. The date on which the insurer receives the letter applies – not the date of the postmark. We advise you to send your cancellation letter in good time by registered post.

Here you will find detailed cancellation information on the respective insurances:
Health insurance
Car and motorcycle insurance
Home contents and personal liability
Legal protection insurance

We show you how you can easily cancel your current insurance policy and switch to a different company in just four steps.

  1. Compare premiums
Premium prices can vary significantly from insurer to insurer, and new products are always arriving on the market. It is therefore well worth comparing deals and switching to a different product.

  2. Request quotes
Request one or more insurance quotes, compare the benefits and find the best deal.

  3. Cancel your policy on time
Find out about your cancellation rights and what deadlines you need to observe. For more details, consult the general conditions of insurance for your policy.

  4. Take out a new policy
You can now accept the chosen quote and enjoy the benefits of a more suitable deal.
Please note that in the case of supplemental health insurance you should take this step first and wait until the new insurer has approved your application before cancelling your current policy.

In Switzerland, some types of insurance are compulsory, which means you are legally obliged to take them out.
This is particularly true of health insurance. You are automatically insured against accidents (UVG/LAA) if you work more than eight hours per week for the same employer. If you are employed for fewer hours, you must take out accident insurance privately as part of your health insurance.

If you have a car or motorcycle, you must take out third-party liability insurance at the very minimum. This covers any damage you may cause to other people’s vehicles or property, as well as personal injury to others.
Partial and full casco insurance are optional but are worth taking out, especially for newer or more expensive vehicles.

Other types of insurance that are not compulsory but everyone should have:
