Federal Office of Private Insurance (FOPI)

The Federal Office of Private Insurance (FOPI) was the supervising authority responsible for the area of private insurance until 31 December 2008. In the health insurance area, the FOPI was in charge of legal matters concerning optional insurance enhancements (supplemental insurance) and acted as licensing authority for the corresponding premiums and benefits.

Since 1 January 2009, state supervision of insurance companies, banks, and other financial intermediaries has been centralised under the responsibility of the Federal Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA).
