Basic health insurance is compulsory for anyone living in Switzerland. Basic insurance benefits are defined in the Health Insurance Act and are the same irrespective of health insurer. Supplemental insurance, on the other hand, is optional and the benefits vary.
You can take out basic and supplemental insurance with different providers. Learn more about taking out basic and supplemental insurance separately.
Prices vary from one insurer to another. It's worth comparing the options.

The cost of your premiums varies depending on your age and place of residence. Your chosen deductible and basic insurance model also make a difference. Choose your deductible and your preferred health insurance model:
If your annual medical expenses are less than CHF 2,000, it’s worth opting for a deductible of CHF 2,500. Otherwise, you’re better off with the CHF 300 deductible.
We’ll display suitable deals in your personal results list. Select your current cover on the left-hand side and discover how much you could save.
Which supplemental insurance makes sense depends on your personal requirements. Compare multiple quotes to find the deal that’s right for you. Possible supplemental insurance products include:
Request multiple quotes free of charge, so you can make your choice – hassle-free and with no obligation. Our brokerage partner Optimatis handles quote requests and forwards your information to health insurers. You’ll then receive your quotes either directly from the health insurers or from Optimatis.
You can cancel your basic insurance every year as long as you do so by the end of November. Here’s a cancellation letter template you can use. You can also sign up for a cancellation reminder so you won’t miss the cancellation deadline.
The cancellation deadlines for supplemental insurance vary depending on the health insurer. They are usually three to six months before the end of the year. Don’t cancel your current policy until you have received confirmation that you’ve been accepted by the new insurer.
The basic insurance comparison tool contains products (premiums) from providers (health insurers) that have been approved by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).
The supplemental insurance comparison tool contains products from providers that accept quote/contact requests from Optimatis, and/or products from providers that do not accept quote/contact requests from Optimatis. The providers listed in this comparison tool use the interface offered by Optimatis.
In the “standard view”, Comparis shows products from providers that accept quote/contact requests from Optimatis, as well as the cheapest and the most expensive product. In the “detailed view”, Comparis shows all products approved by the FOPH (basic insurance comparison) or all premiums from providers who use the interface offered by Optimatis (supplementary insurance comparison).
The search results are ranked according to objectively measurable criteria, corresponding to the selected filter. Results exempted from this order are clearly marked as “Advertisement”. Further details on the insurers (text in blue flags) are defined by these insurers in exchange for payment, but have no influence on the ranking.

You can switch basic health insurance every year. The deadline for changing your health insurance or cancelling the policy is 30 November. There is no need to notify insurers of any pre-existing conditions. This means a health declaration is not necessary.
However, you do have to fill in a health questionnaire if you want to switch supplemental insurance. Having a pre-existing condition does not necessarily mean you will be rejected though. Depending on how long ago it was diagnosed or treated, you may still be accepted. At most, the pre-existing condition will be excluded from the cover.
Always remember to wait for the new insurer to confirm your acceptance for supplemental insurance before cancelling your current policy.

In accordance with the Accident Insurance Act, anyone employed at least eight hours per week by a single employer or registered with their regional employment centre (RAV) is automatically insured against accidents.
Even if you have accident insurance through your employer, you may wish to add this cover to your supplemental insurance policy if you want benefits such as alternative medicine or better hospital cover following an accident.
All basic health insurance policies cover in-patient treatment and examinations in hospitals in a general ward in your canton of residence. However, if you want to be treated in a hospital in another canton or would prefer a higher level of quality and comfort, you can take out supplemental hospital insurance. You don’t necessarily have to take out basic and supplemental insurance with the same insurer. However, having separate insurance policies may incur administration fees.
