1. In which regions is my car insurance valid?
You can use your car insurance abroad in the following areas:
Switzerland
Principality of Liechtenstein
European States listed on the International Motor Insurance Card (formerly Green Card)
Countries bordering the Mediterranean, e.g. Tunisia or Morocco
Mediterranean island states, e.g. Cyprus or Malta
Journeys by sea are covered by insurance as long as the departure point and destination are situated within these areas.
Green Card exclusions
Your car insurance is not necessarily valid in all states that have signed the Green Card Agreement. The scope varies from provider to provider and there may be exclusions – especially for Russia and the Caucasus countries. Contact your insurer for more information.
2. What happens with my car insurance if I leave Switzerland?
Are you moving away from Switzerland or the Principality of Liechtenstein? In this case, your insurance contract will expire by the end of the insurance year at the latest. However, you can usually arrange for the contract to end earlier. The decisive factor is usually the date on which you deposit your licence plates at the Road Traffic Office.
It’s worth reading your car insurance contract carefully in advance. This defines your rights and obligations, including the contract length and cancellation notice period. Often, the devil is in the details, so it’s a good idea to read through the general conditions of insurance carefully.
