Things to watch out for with your mobile plan

Switching to a new provider doesn't have to be time-consuming or hard work. We have put together the important points for you to keep in mind.

Your new mobile phone plan in four steps

There are many different mobile service providers in Switzerland. The right one for you depends on what you need.

Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt each operate their own mobile network. Coverage quality can vary from place to place. Think about the places where you spend most of your time, such as at home, at the office or on your way to work. Be sure to check the network coverage for these locations from the mobile operator of your choice: check network coverage

Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt tend to be more expensive, but as they also have their own shops, they can provide face-to-face customer care and support. Other providers use the same network but offer lower prices with a lower level of service. As a rule, mobile phone plans vary according to product features, length of contract and cost.

Note the minimum contract term and the notice periods for your current contract. You can normally cancel your plan by calling or writing to your mobile provider’s customer service department. Sometimes there is also the option to cancel directly via chat on the website. You will usually by able to cancel early for a fee.

If you decide to switch to a different provider, the new company will take care of cancelling your previous contract.

You can keep your phone number and there is no charge to do so. When arranging the new contract mention that you wish to port the number. Your new provider will take care of transferring the existing number for you.

Your new provider will tell you exactly when the new charges will apply and send you the new SIM card in good time. The SIM card has a new PIN, which you can change in your settings when you first insert the card.

FAQs about mobile phone plans

Mobile phone plans differ in what they offer, the length of the contract, and the cost. The price is based on the following:

  • Volume of mobile data

  • Roaming (use of phone abroad)

  • Internet speed

  • Unlimited Internet, calls and text/multimedia messages

  • Provider and network coverage

Plans are available to suit all types of user. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • How many minutes of calls do you make per month?

  • How much mobile data do you use per month?

  • Do you often travel abroad and want to use your mobile while you are there?

Your answers will give you an idea of your needs. If you only use your mobile phone occasionally, a prepaid deal should suffice. Simply top up your phone credit before use. This option does not tie you to a particular provider, so you can switch to a different company at any time. Prepaid deals that include data packages are also available, so you can still access the Internet when away from home.

If you make a lot of calls or are often on the Internet, you should consider a flat-rate deal. If you frequently travel abroad, your plan should include roaming.

The most common data plans offer 1 GB, 4  GB or unlimited data per month. 1 GB of mobile data is enough to read news articles and e-mails and write WhatsApp messages. If you mainly use social media, you will find that 1 to 4GB of mobile data is enough. If you listen to music for several hours at a time, you’ll need at least 4GB. If you like to stream videos and films on YouTube and Netflix or surf on your laptop using your mobile phone hotspot, an unlimited deal is your best bet.

Here are some examples of data usage as a guide:

  • Social media: 300 MB for 30 minutes

  • Watching a football match on the go: 6 GB

  • Watching Netflix with low-quality resolution: 250 MB

  • Sending a WhatsApp text message of 200 characters: 1 KB

  • Sending a video via WhatsApp: to up 90 KB

  • Sending a voice message via WhatsApp: 0.3 MB per minute

With a flat rate, you pay the same price each month. You have unlimited Internet use, plus unlimited calls and text messages. A flat rate plan is particularly useful if you make a lot of calls and often browse the Internet on your phone.

5G is the latest generation of mobile technology and a global standard. Compared to 4G, 5G networks achieve significantly faster Internet speeds. Depending on network coverage and the distance from the tower, 5G phones can be up to ten times quicker than 4G phones.

A roaming plan makes sense if you travel abroad regularly and often make calls and use the Internet while you are there.

A prepaid deal is the right choice for people who mainly just want to be reachable by phone and primarily use WiFi for the Internet. So if you don't make many calls yourself and don’t actually need a data connection, you can save a lot of money by choosing a prepaid deal. However, if you do sometimes need to access the Internet while away from home, you can always purchase a prepaid data package.

A data plan allows you to use mobile Internet. In other words, you can be online on your laptop, tablet or smartwatch while you are out and about. You can also take out a data plan for a mobile network router for your Internet at home.
