  • Check if you already have a travel insurance (also credit cards sometimes include travel protection!)
  • Beware: the REGA is not an insurance. Also as a benefactor you are not entitled to benefits
  • In the case of events abroad, it is recommended to contact the insurance company straight away -> carry on you the emergency number of the 24h help line as well as your policy number
  • An annual travel insurance also covers risks that are not covered by temporary travel insurances (e.g. processing fees at the travel agency)
  • Usually, the travel luggage is not covered in the travel insurance. The insurers offer a travel luggage insurance, however, as a supplement and for an additional fee. This supplement covers the risks theft, robbery and damage as well as loss and damage during transport through a transport company. Not covered are items you lost yourself. Tip: take out a travel luggage insurance as supplementary coverage to your household policy. This is usually cheaper.
  • If you should be travelling by car, you need a vehicle assistance (breakdown service). This supplement covers breakdown and towing service as well as the returning costs and the additional costs for the further travel, if the car should be unable to be driven. Usually, coverage is limited to Europe.
  • When travelling into problem countries, it is recommended to take out a legal protection insurance for abroad. Especially in the case of accidents with a rental car (private liability does not offer any protection here), exorbitant claims can be refused or advance bail money for the prevention of custody can be avoided. Beware: comprehensive protection abroad is only given by a general legal protection policy!
Not insured - medical aid abroad!

Doctor and hospital costs abroad are not covered by the travel insurance. The "advanced money" for doctor and hospital costs (usually CHF 5,000) mentioned in the travel insurance have to be paid back to the insurance company.

For holidays within Europe, the compulsory basic insurance from the health insurance is sufficient. Important: you should always carry your "European health insurance card" on you so that the bill does not have to be paid on the spot.

The compulsory basic insurance and the accident insurance (UVG/SUVA), however, only cover the double amount of expenses of what the treatment by a doctor/hospital would have cost in the canton of residence. Therefore, it is recommended to take out a supplementary insurance for countries outside of Europe (e.g.: USA, Japan, Australia), as treatment in these countries can get quite expensive.

Tip: find out about existing benefits and the possibilities of supplementary insurances from your health insurance before your trip.
