Which risks does an annual travel insurance cover?

Taking out a travel insurance is part of the travel preparations. Already for small money you can get protection against the financial consequences of illnesses, accidents and natural disasters. The travel insurance contains annulation protection and personal assistance.

When does the insurance pay? It pays when the policyholder cannot undertake the already booked and paid trip due to certain reasons. It covers the costs of an early return journey, a rescue or recovery due to risks incurring during the trip. Also, the part of the trip which is “not used up” and – with some insurance providers – even a new trip are paid. Also only a temporary return home or additionally caused stay at a hotel is covered.
Covered risks/reasons
  • Accident
  • Illness
  • Death
  • Natural disasters/epidemics
  • Riots in the holiday destination
  • Transport breakdown (airline / train strike)
  • Loss of job shortly before trip

Relationship problems and slight ailments are not reasons.

  • Illness
  • Natural disasters
  • Political riots
  • Illness or accident of travelling person or of family and friends / deputy at work (also in case of death)
When is an annual travel insurance worthwhile? It is worthwhile for holiday arrangements in the middle and high price range. Is especially recommended for travels to problem countries and for extreme tours.
Bear in mind!

The annulation protection should - apart from Europa or worldwide - also include Switzerland (this is often forgotten).

If you have an annual travel insurance, you can in any case do without the offered "compulsory" annulation cost insurances.

The basic insurance of the health insurance pays for repatriation (transport costs in the case of early return) CHF 5,000 at most. Additionally, the "un-used" part of the trip and -with some providers - even a new trip are included.

The personal assistance must apply worldwide, also explicitly for Switzerland.

The personal assistance can also be taken out separately, i.e. without cancellation protection.
