People who are resident in Switzerland due to education or further education, notably students or trainees, can be relieved from the compulsory basic insurance for at most 3 years if a request is submitted to the according cantonal authorities. Relief from compulsory insurance is only possible if the person has an equivalent insurance from their country of origin for the whole period of validity of the relief. A written confirmation with the required information from the responsible foreign authority has to be attached to the request. KVV, Art. 2 Para. 4
